Internet Retailer Web Design Conference 2011

Wednesday, February 16, 2011 by John Deines
My first conference completed with iGoDigital was the Internet Retailer Web Design and Usability Conference at the beautiful hotel Hyatt Cypress in Orlando, Florida.  As I enjoy the last few hours of my trip sitting pool side with the relaxing sound of an artificial waterfall in my business clothes with no shoes on, I reflect on a whirlwind of two days of education, conversations and fun.

The IRWD conference hosted over 40 speakers from around the USA and over 4,000 attendees that included vendors, retailers and almost anything in relation to online business management that you can imagine.  It was an extremely valuable learning experience for a young eCommerce professional.  The online retail market continues to change and extremely intelligent people continually revolutionize the way business will be done for many years to come.

My favorite event of the two day blitz was enjoying the company of two great retailers, eCampus.com and Shindgiz.  One is a rapidly expanding iGoDigital personalization client and the other a growing textbook provider featured in the Internet Retailer Top 500.  The evening started with three strangers and ended with three guys talking like old friends.  The conversation ranged from the future of eCommerce personalization to how we all have resided in the great state of Indiana.  While the dinner was enjoyable, it was a great opportunity for all three parties to learn more about each other and the organizations we so proudly represent.

Among all the excitement and fun, a great deal of insightful professionals shared ideas to large crowds eager to learn and adapt new technology and ideas to their eCommerce strategy.  A quick stat taken from the President of E-Tail who mentioned that the highest ROI items a retailer can currently add to their site are: (i) personalized cross sell opportunities (85%), (ii) personalized up sell scenarios (77%) and (iii) "What’s New" scenarios on the home page (79%).  This thankfully bodes very well for the iGoDigital business model as personalization continues to be on the forefront of eCommerce strategies.

With it all said and done, the two most prominent messages of my trip to Orlando included A/B testing and personalizing the online shopping experience.  So I ask any reader who did not attend, are you currently personalizing your website and testing those results to maximize your conversation rates and AOV?  If not, you may be providing your competitors an advantage, missing out on opportunities to enhance customer satisfaction, and simply just leaving money on the table.

So long from Orlando - next stop, San Diego for the IRCE in June! iGoDigital will be in booth 606. Make sure to stop by!
